Depends on your operating system - I expect if its started to slow down then you are using Microsoft Windows as Linux and Mac OS X don't usually suffer from speed problems.

Note that simple deleting old files won't make a speed difference unless your drive is 100% full.

If it is Microsoft Windows you're using, then you're looking at doing a lot of stuff!

1 - Your file system has become fragmented. Use either the "defrag" that you get with Microsoft Windows, or purchase professional defragmention software. Schedule the defrag for at least once a week.

2 - You have a corrupt and / or bloated registry. Run something like Regcompact.Net to compact a bloated registry, or CCleaner to help clean a corrupt registry.

3 - You have many services starting from old, unused programs. Go to "Add/Remove programs" and uninstall everything you don't use any more.

4 - You have lots of programs using the "system tray". Right click over each of them, select their preferences and untick "start in system tray".

5 - You've installed a whole bunch of "malware". Spyware, adware and trojans all pile up and slow your system down. Run a once-off clean with the free version of Superantispyware:

Then purchase the commercial version and ensure you scan and update daily. You could also opt for the protection software from F-Secure or Sophos. Avoid Norton.

6 - You're running a dynamically sized paging file. Switch to a fixed size paging file of 768Mb. Start, settings, control panel, system, advanced, virtual memory - set the size to 768 in both boxes. Reboot.

Go into the control panel. Under performance and maintenance-there is an option to rearrange files to speed up computer, click on that. This is where you can defragment the files. It gets rid of the old junk and sorts thru and cleans up the remaining files on your PC.

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Delete what you are not using or need
Do the Disc Cleanup
Defrag your computer
Delete any files/music/pictures you are not needing to keep
Alot of this will add more space to your pc and make it go faster.
You can also buy RAM and make it faster.

Good luck

You need to clean up the temporary files as well as other chunk of files which get accumulated due to daily uses.
I advice you to use a free Utility like CC Cleaner. It will manage the task itself and you dont need to delete the temporary files manually.
You may download CC Cleaner from below link

start - all programs - accessories - system tools - disk defragmenter - analyze

run this disk defragmenter on all of your local disk drives. analyze them first and when suggested defreagment them. this does not delete old files, but rearranges them. it will help with the memory problem.
the old files you have to delete yourself. do this before defragmenting.

good luck
