You will need to know the following about your card - the make, model and manufacturer. For example, Creative Audigy 2.

You can then go to the manufacturer's website and look at the technical specifications.

If you aren't sure how to get this information about your card, you will need to know which Operating System you have installed.

For linux:
Run the command "lspci". Check your soundcard with a line like this one:

00:0c.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Audigy (rev 03)

For Mac OS X or Windows, go through the hardware browser.

The problem with Windows though, is that unless you have the driver for your soundcard installed, it will only show up as "Unknown Device". In this case, the only way to know is to open the box and look.

easy answer to this look at the back of your computer. you will see your soundcards out puts. in modern computers the ports are normally coloured as follows:
Pink = Microphone
Blue = Line in
Green = FrontSpeakers out
grey black and orange on a 7.1 card and your 5.1 card should have:
Orange = Centre + sub woofer (BASS)
Black = Rear (if no orange then black may only be the digital out)

with Grey being for Side speaker on a 7.1 system
assuming you are using analogue out puts

A 5.1 sound card would be useless without 5.1 output, so I see a very simple way to tell. Look at the sound card's ports on your computer case. If there are not outputs for 5.1, it doesn't have it. Hope I helped!
