I want to start my own website that friends and family can join to share news and photo's and things. where is best and if possible free and not so hard to use??

These two have been around for years, might I suggest you stay away from tripod, they give out free adware and spyware.
If you have yahoo instant messenger you can add me and ask any questions you have regarding the set up and use of geocities.

For your information, yahoo provides group option and save the photos to your id and share whatever you like.
Also, the you can create a group and send a email to that group, every one receive you email.

Why will you create a new website?

I have got to highly recommend blogger.com / blogspot.com

My blog (below) I use as like a diary, but friends of mine use them for their personal web page. I have also used it (with multiple user accounts) for collaboration on school assignments, and it is so easy to use anyone can do it.

I use Tripod. Tripod is very easy to use and set up...very customizable, and there is no need to know CSS or HTML codes, although you can use code to make your websight as well. for more information go to http://www.tripod.lycos.com .
