Hitting the disc with a hammer...that is the only way to destroy the contents of old hard disks.

I have worked on secure sites and at the time we used Norton Diskwipe. It puts a series of 0's one way the 1's the other and then we used to physically destroy the drive as well.
I'm not sure if that still available. Alternatively go to www.majorgeeks.com. They have a full section of drive cleaning utilities if you do not want to destroy the drive.

Elviti they'd be for classic desktops, and function between the older interfaces. For a no longer difficulty-free tension for a sparkling computing device, you mustn't pay that plenty (for like a SATA or SATAII). An older no longer difficulty-free tension to place in an previous computing device is going to tension the fee up, mutually with an RDL no longer difficulty-free tension case in point, that would flow into an previous IBM or IBM clone. the comparable element is going on with memory. because of the fact the DDR3 memory now starts to enhance into customary, its value will drop because of the fact the call for will improve and manufacturers "gadget up". some older vintages of memory have precisely the comparable concern. they do no longer look to be synthetic from now on and fee $$$. maximum toss the computing device at that element, yet some % to shop it, for inner maximum reasons or maybe it became their dads' or mothers' and that they % to maintain it. satisfied computing!

Don't bother with any software-based solutions. Physical destruction's the only certain way - ripped my drive apart and mangled the disks with a hammer and then an axe.

the american government has a expensive machine that pierces the disc with a titanium spike then dips the drive into a bath of acid.

Some Cheap Nails and a Bucket work equally well.

I saw a documentary on this subject once. They were hitting the disc with a hammer, then even put it in a bonfire. And there was STILL recoverable info on it. It's amazing what the security services can do, especially if they are looking for kiddie porn.

connect the hard drive to a working machine and format the drive if you are still worried about someone recovering old data you could then format the drive using an alternate file system

don't bother with any software the best way is to put a nail right through it, making sure it pierces all the platters inside and the data will be pretty mch unrecoverable. I think the only way to be sure is by doing it yourself
