Right, i've got an interview at a college in two weeks. I want to take art a-level, but i don't have a gcse in the subject, so they asked me to bring my portfolio. I've got stacks of drawings at home, but they are all fantasy (as in faeries and elves and stuff) and all in pencil. Do i just bring them, or...what? What do i do? Help! SOS! Thank you in advance...

Present them well. Put them in a nice folder- scrapbook etc on good backgrounds. Perhaps show how and why you got to drawing them- what influences you. Other artists? Fantasy novels? Myths and folklore? This will give you something to talk about. Even make a scrap book of sketches and perhaps collect things which interest you- such as scraps out of magazines or print stuff off the Internet. Anything such as textures, patterns etc. Perhaps try drawing one in pastels or colours or even different pencils hard and soft etc to show variety.

Also find an artist you really like and learn a little about them and their work- will give you something else to discuss. Be yourself- it is art and therefore creativity and individuality count. Be positive and perhaps think about why you wish to study art in terms of career or why you like it. Also show willing to try other medias and art techniques such as painting, sculpture and ceramics, pastels and chalks/charcoal etc.

if you want to increase your chances...it is best if you have a range of media and a range of subjects....they want to see colour work and work from observation. So try to do a few pieces to show them you're versatile and that you know how to deal with paints and stuff as well as pencil. Plus A-level art requires a lot of observational drawings. I do art and we never draw elves or anything imaginery. most of it has to be from observation.

Art is a persons personal expression, if Elves and Fairies are your choice, and your portfolio is of these, thats what they want to see at the interview. Good Luck

Take all your drawings. The teachers will see the talent in your work. Certificates only prove the work done, if you take your drawings and a pencil you can prove your skill there and then.

Good luck. Guru

Pick the best ones and bring them. So what if they're in pencil?

art is an expression and when you go into schools like that they are really just looking at your potential and creativity....sometimes in interviews it is hard to be yourself and that is why it is so great when you have art because who you are can be reflective in your art....so take your work in and know that you can only improve...
