And...could they be used as pack animals?

Yes. They used to have Ostrich races at a local fair near my town. The jockeys would ride them around the track. I think it would be harder to ride an emu because they're smaller and can't quite carry a persons weight. The pack animal question is interesting. I bet they could be useful if you weren't carrying alot of load. They would be even more useful considering that you could use them as food as well. The hard part would be finding a way to keep them contained, like in a form of halter or lead. Also you would need a way to keep the load balanced on them. I used to work at a farm that had emus lose with the cattle and although they were hand raised and semi tame, if you didn't give them time daily to get used to your presence, they would become very aggressive and threathening. Not to mention anything new always got them riled up. Once a plastic bag was blown into the pasture they were in and as soon as they set eyes on it they all went crazy. Everything and anything was suspicious and withint minutes the bad was shredded and everything was under investigation. Anytime I entered their yard I carried an old shovel handle and I had to use a couple times to save myself from becoming emu scratching post. So they are easily spooked, and can have quite a temper on them.
