You could try locating the codecs but in my experience, you never quite find the right one for WMP. Try downloading WinAmp. It's free and can usually play anything: http://www.winamp.com/
Also RealPlayer. http://uk.real.com/player/?&src=ZG.uk.home.home.hd.def - go for the free version, on the right.
The ultimate pack is the K-Lite codec pack: http://www.k-litemegacodecpack.com/ - this will enable you to play almost anything (video or music) on your computer.
None of these packs takes up much space and I find it helps to have 3 or 4 players on your system. If one can't cope, another will definitely be able to.
Good luck! :)

Codec is third party software that supports a type of media compression. You will need to install the correct codec to play a file type. I would strongly recommend using an alternative platform first before installing codecs as codecs usually contain spyware now.
Checkout VLC player and see if that corrects the problem for you.

You don't say what version of media player you have, if you have a genuine copy of windows then I would suggest downloading the latest version which is media player 11 and then try again to play your CD's and see if this sorts out the problem, good luck

Try right clicking on the song and converting it into something else like an MP3. Then resave it into your music folder and add to the Windows Media Player library again.

It sounds like you may have to update media player. What version do you have... if you have a help tab when you open it click on that and check for updates.. if you do not have a help tab right click on the upper left corner and you will get choices, help being one of them.. choose that and pick update.. hope this helps

go to http://search.microsoft.com/results.aspx?mkt=en-US&mkt=en-US&q=codecs you will see a list of options to read through find the one that relates to the version of media player you are using.
click on the link and select download.
failing to go to a genuine microsoft website for items such as codecs or updates could leave you open to malware attacks
