tom and john go to school because tom and john can also be described as 'they'...so its like ur saying 'they go to school' you can't say they goes to school...tom and john are two people therefore the plural rule applies and not the singular (tom goes to school/ he goes to school)

I just cannot believe that your teacher says it should be 'goes'. Is that the complete sentence or is there more?? For instance, if the sentence was "The sister of Tom and John ---- to school" then it would be "goes".
If the sentence is just "Tom and John ---- to school" then of course it should be "go". If your teacher really does think it should be "goes", tell your parents. They should be told about it!

Go is used for plural n goes is used for singular

For example:
1. Mary goes to school
2. They go to the library everyday
