He is in need of some good professional help. He has not overcome the loss. He may be having a lot of guilt over all that has happened.
One thing is remain his friend and loyal to him. He will need your support emotinally. Try to get him to see a professional or get into greif counseling.there are many greif help goups around and he may need their support also.
Hope you can persuade him to do this. he needs it .

I'm sorry but, if he's still grieving over her he's beyond your help. He needs professional help and quick. If he has had a mild break down and, it sounds like he has, he needs help or he may never come out of it.
Sometimes we think we are doing someone a favor by helping them when we are actually harming them. After all this time if he hasn't had a handle on his grief he may never now.
The best thing you could do is encourage him to get counseling. We all suffer differently, some average a few months, some a year but "years" is abnormal.

I agree with both answerers before me. Your friend should get professional help. A person like him is way beyond mere words. We have no idea our that our words might hurt him, or even send him deeper into that abyss. Ask him to look for professional help. Tell him, it doesn't make him a nutcase. It only means he needs help.

I have the same feeling of love with my daughter who passed away at the age of one years. After forty years it is very difficult for me to forget her. It is due to the extreme love with the daughter. I also cry in the night when she comes to my memories. I love her very much. My wife failed to give her proper treatment. I therefore rebuked my wife and also hhold her responsible for the death of my daughter. OK. It is the will of God. Please be calm and cool.
