I live in an old house and the floor joists and the sub floor are very dark. My house was built around 85 years ago. On the other hand, I know of 2 homes about 30 years old and the joists and plywood are light in color.

Does wood darken over the years and/or what causes this? Or was it dark to begin with? thanks

Hey thanks for the answers. However, the dark wood doesn't concern me in the least bit. I am just interested about old houses and basements and stuff. Dark, light, or whatever color, doesn't take from the strength necessarly.

Wood darkens with age. It's nothing to worry about.

dark is ok but damp or flaking is another..........go under and drill and 1/4" hole in the middle of a joist and collect the material that comes out and take it into good light and check for dampness......
