Wow, a few really good answers already. Let me add a bit ...
Hitler was a product of his era. A brilliant public speaker, he rose to lead a movement that brought Germany from the poverty and weakness imposed by the Allies after WWI to near success in dominating Europe and North Africa.
That's the good part.
The bad part is that old 'Dolph was truly a product of his times. Racism was not a German province, it was a global phenomenon. The Brits oppressed their subject peoples, the French, the Japanese, the Americans (ask a Japanese-American about that one), the Spanish ... it was pretty much a global phenomenon and by no means dead today.
See, the practice of genocide (which the Germans characteristically carried out with efficiency and full documentation) simply requires a strong "us and them" mentality. While "we" are righteous, smart, handsome, godly, honest, and destined for power, "they" are evil, ugly, stupid, pagan, corrupt and destined for destruction or assimilation.
Hitler realized this characteristic and used it well. He defined a fictional but enticing "Us" (the "Aryan Race") that would attract his desired allies (and the Persians, too). The "them" he chose - the outsiders (Jews, Gypsies, defectives, homosexuals, etc.) - were peoples that were comparatively easy to identify through language, custom, behavior or appearance.
Rallying "Us" around fear and suspicion and repugnance of "Them" let Hitler unite and direct his people. And a united people (even one united under the banner of hatred) is a powerful thing.
These days, Dubya Bush is using "fear" in much the same way as Hitler used "hate." The result is much the same, even though the victims are seldom (intentionally) slain.
But unlike hate, fear is a difficult emotion to maintain, and so the furor over "Terror" that let Bush rally and direct the American mob to a pointless, irrational attack on his dad's enemies, has wained to the point where his fellow travellers have lost control of the nation (unless the attempted assassination of Senator Tim Johnson is successful ... "arteriovenous malformation"? How convenient!).
Hitler did what he did for power and to direct his nation to recover its glory, using racism and hate. Bush is doing what he does for power and to enrich his confederates and cronies, using racism and fear.
You picks yer dictator, you takes yer chances.
Cheers.

Because he was a fanatical German nationalist. He thought that Germany had been cheated by the Treaty of Versailles at the end of WWI. he blamed a great deal of this on 'Jewish conspiracies' (wrongly, of course) He also blamed the Jews for the economic problems experienced in Germany after the war. he was, in this respect, building on long-standing historical anti-semitism in central Europe. The moral? Never believe in conspiracy theories - they are usually put about by nutters. The 'cock-up' theory of history is far more valid (IMHO)

Adolf Hitler succumbed to the taste of power and hate.
Having been given the power to control a vast and strong army, he waged war against the Jews that he hated so much.

Hitler did what he did because he was a sinner, an enemy of God, totally depraved. And 'but for the grace of God, there go I.'

because his father beat him when he was a child so of course he learned how to be mean. He also had uneven testicles and he wanted the world to be perfect so he killed the people which to him seemed unperfect. I learned it in our Social Science class
