The number 40 has significance in the Bible. A couple of examples.

The people of Israel wandered in the desert for 40 years before God led them into the promised land.

Jesus fasted for 40 days in the desert and had a confrontation with Satan at the end of that time. Only then did He start His public ministry.

The number 40 is associated with trials and testing.

According to Biblical Numerology it is the number of probation or trial. Historically the Israelites wandered for 40 years (Deut. 8:2-5). Moses was on the mount for 40 days (Exodus 24:18); 40 days of Jonah and Nineveh (Jonah 3:4). Jesus was tempted for 40 days (Matt. 4:2).
