If you're in the UK, you can only claim compensation if it's not your fault. Gritting machines chuck out grit. If you're daft enough to drive into it, you can't blame the gritter.
If you're in the USA, you can probably sue your parents for not teaching you at an early age that actions have consequences.

If you were overtaking the gritter it will teach you to be more carefull in future. There are plenty of windscreen repair specialists who will repair the crack in your windscreen...at a cost.
Why should you get compensated ? Even if the wagon threw debris up that hit your windscreen and cracked it that is called Unlucky. Not "i want some money"...jeeeezze

Hi I have just had this happen to me. Phone your insurance people right away, you should have done this when it happened. I called mine, I am covered on my policy for the windscreen, you might have something to pay, just depends on your policy. Because the windscreen company's are so overloaded right now because of this happening to stacks of people, there is a delay in getting seen. I will have to wait till the end of this week. I have a mot to but because I have already got this booked and can prove that I have and they will go ahead with my mot. You need to cover yourself and talk to insurance and your mot centre they may delay the mot until your screen is ok. Its not at the moment. No matter where it is or goes, its cracked, the days are gone where they are gonna talk your word that one day you will get it fixed. The persons who's name is on the MOT could jeopardise their job by stating something false

You need to report it to the local council (local to where the incident occurred). They will then try to brush it under the carpet, so you'll want to keep chasing them, they can take their time giving money out (but not taking it off us...)
You may well need to prove though that the gritting lorry caused the crack. It would take a series of quite unlikely events to pass (unless you were speeding...) for the grit to cause any damage other than dirtying your car!

You'll be lucky! The council's insurers will require you to prove it was their fault - and you'll have a hell of a job doing that. Gritting machines chuck out grit, fact, if you drove into it that's your problem, I'm afraid.

You can't pass a gritting lorry without your car sustaining some damage. Usually its just small chips in the paint.

I would have to say not. It would be more agro than shelling out the £50.it would also be difficult to prove the grit caused the crack. sorry

Looking down barrel of revolver while testing trigger mechanism without even finding out whether all the chambers are empty. click, click, click BANG.
I would argue that you did this one to yourself, pal - what do you think a gritting machine is for?
The only truly infinite thing is human stupidity.

No chance ! Just get it replaced on your insurance, it wont affect your NCD, you mmay have to contribute £50.00 or so. Next time be more patient and wait till the gritter stops.
