579 A.D. A.D. means "In The Year Of Our Lord" in Latin. This year is year 2006 in the Christian calendar counting from the birth of Christ 2006 years ago.
Dates before that are B.C.= Before Christ.
These are counted in reverse i.e. One year before Christ's birth is known as 1 B.C Two years before 2 B.C. and so on. Obviously people living then did not know this and used a different calendar system.
