In Michigan it is now called a Bridge Card. It acts like a debit card for food. In some cases people actually get cash assistance which is also on the card. The food stamp part is still only for food however. You cannot take the balance out.

Food stamps have gone hi-tech. The money you are given to buy food no longer comes in books in stamp form, even tho it is still called food stamps, it now comes on a card that looks and acts like a debit card. The money is coded into the system, and paid out with the card, at the store.

No one can loose or give away their subsidy now. It has to go for food, and not anything else.
