Educate yourself on prevention. Seriously! An easy way to scan for a virus in suspected software is to e-mail it through yahoo mail, then try to download it. It works really well for detecting virus' in attachments. As far as protection on your computer, virus software will tell you when you have one, but they don't usually keep you from getting one. A virus has to clicked on to run in the first place, either directly or piggy backed in contaminated sofware that was downloaded. When you install the software, you install the virus.

I've had good luck with AVG Anti-Virus Free, which is a free software package for private, non-commercial, and single home computer use only. Worked like a charm for me so far, and far less annoying for its updates than Symantec. Also, far more stable.

AVG is probably one of the best options as most people are saying. The problem with Norton and Symantec antivirus products is that people are creating viruses to sneak past those products and other popular antivirus software. Another option that I like for my computer is anti-vir (http://www.free-av.com/).

I have been using AVG from the Czech Republic and have been very happy with it. No virsues or worms, runs in the background easily and doesn't take forever to load up like the expensive ones.
