You can use one if you have an ethernet card and go somewhere with high-speed wireless internet, but if you want to use it at home, you will need an internet connection. I have a Toshiba laptop, and I love it - it has a great extended warranty plan that's cheaper than the one you get at the store, and it wasn't too expensive, plus it has all the features I wanted in a laptop...I love the 16" screen - it's almost the same size as my desktop computer, but portable. Great for gaming and multimedia stuff. I don't like Dell or Compaq, because they're not customizable at all beyond the initial selection of parts. If you're looking for something high-end, then Alienware is a good bet.

No problem. For normal use at home, you will need to acquire an internet contract. The physical connection is done with a "modem" via your phone line - probably any new machine will have a modem built in. Try investigating various isp's (internet service providers) to compare what they offer with what you want.

Personally, I've never had any problem with Dell, contrary to others' experiences. Certainly they seem better than PCWorld, who will try to flog your whatever they can for the commission!
