The kind of immortality where our physical body never ages.

When you reach "Nirvana" you're supposed to be immortal or in a deathless state. Buddha is supposed to have been immortal but died because of something he ate.

the only way to become immortal is to have a mathematical theorem misattributed to you, sukruday

And Rasputin made it a little longer than Jesus.

Actually I didn't realize that the Buddha ever claimed it, either. No, I've never heard of anybody claiming to be immortal during actual recorded history. If you count the earlier parts of the Bible as an historical document, they have people living 700+ years. I don't know what Methusalah would have said about his health status.

i don't think Buddha ever claimed he was immortal and if he was immortal then howcome he died
he only claimed to have been enlightened and to have come to know how to lead ones life so that one may attain freedom from sorrow and suffering.
helloooooooooooo open ur eyes immortality is a state is when u do not die no matter what happens to u if u r talking about spiritual immortality i can agree with u but buddha died at the age of 80 at kushinagara in the year 485BC.
and when they say one attains nirvana is when the person dies and attains spiritual immortality.nirvana which is spiritual immortality is very much different from physical immortality where the persons is physically present and his body will never cease to work even when something happens to that person that is physical immortality which buddha did not attain the immortality he attained was spiritual immortality.
i hope this has cleared all ur doubts about nirvana and immortality.

The Buddha never claimed that he is an immortal. He claimed to have discovered the path leading to the deathlessness, which is totally different from physical immortallity.
The B uddha's mahaparinibbana is a perfect example of the truth of his teaching;Anicca or impermanence. If the Buddha had achieved physical immortallity he would have contradicted his own teaching!

There are other Buddhas besides Siddhartha Gautama. So yes, there are others who have achieved the Nirvana. Theravada Buddhism recognizes only Gautama and the past Buddhas, but in Mahayana Buddhism, everyone has the potential to become a buddha.

Here is a good site which will describe some Buddhas (I wasn't satisfied with the Wikipedia list which is fairly unreadable)

Several other people in history have been credited with achieving 'enlightenment' including rulers of Buddhist countries. The Chinese and Tibetans have had their own Buddhas for centuries, as well as recognizing the original Lord Buddha (Prince Siddhata). I believe Buddha also said that anyone could achieve enlightenment and that he was not the first to do so.

Nirvana isn't quite the same thing as earthly immortality; one reaches Nirvana by dying, and is more or less reincarnated there. Immortality on this earth would be, if anything, the very opposite of Nirvana; an eternity spent in samsara is tantamount to hell.

First off Buddha was a very real person. And even though Buddha died his lesson will live on forever to all of those that believed in his teachings. So it was his teaching have gained immortallity. Not the man himself.. Also there was Confucius. And may other teachers and story tellers that have captured immortality in the same manner. I won't write all their names down for it would take a lot of writing.................. But I am sure that you understand what I am saying...................................................
