i bought a female beta at wal-mart and it looks like a female. she's almost white and has short fins and not very big. i've had her for over two years now. i bought a nice tank and was wanting to add another female. i just want to make sure that i have a female. are there any other ways to tell other than less color and short fins?

It sounds like a female. That said sexing bettas is more of an art. The best way I've found is looking for the egg spot, or ovipositor. See link for details.

PS- Note that females fight. A new betta may result in some nasty fighting. Generally you need at least 10 gallons and 3 betta. Personally I go with 1 female per 5 gallons. I'd advise a nice swordtail, platy, or cory cat instead.

sounds like a female, you should be safe, however, if you're going to add more you're going to need at least 2 more. you cna't have 2 famles together 3 or more is better. if you have a 10gallon tank try getting 3 or 4 more. 4 or 5 bettas would be okay in a 10 gallon as long as there's a good filter and heater.

good luck!

Female bettas are typically much less vibrantly colored and have very short fins in comparison to males.

It sounds to me like you have a female and you should be ok adding more females to the tank.

your correct but you should not by a female buy a male she will not live very long without a female anyway the other way to tell its a girl is by looking at the bottom of the betta if it has a big pouch its a female if not male

Other than shortness of fins and less color, I'm not sure.
