Same as when you fly or swim in deep water... Pressure
Your ear drums have an interior prressure that matches your atmosphere, as that pressure changes you feel it "pop"

The difference of pressure between inside your ear and the outside world. As you go higher, the pressure is lower/higher (not sure). The pressure inside your ear will tend to make it balance therefore the pop feeling on your ear

The air pressure inside your vehicle will increase or decrease depending on where you are.

Higher altitudes (Even slightly higher ones) will usually produce stuffy ears, or popped ears.

You've either ascended or descended into a new atmospheric pressure zone, so your ear must equallize the internal pressure to the atmosphere.
