Because we are short sighted when it comes to avoiding pain & delaying gratifications.
I find the wisdom in the book of Proverbs (in the Bible) to be incomparable when addressing these issues, and with quite a picturesque and humerous approach.
Best in a modern translation like The New International Version.
One of my personal favorites is so palinly evident in the world around us "As a dog returns to it's vomit, so a fool returns to his folly."
Never heard a better description of a Meth freak.
And the book of Proverbs also has a unique way of contrasting wisdom with folly. It's verses have strengthened me many times when I knew the right course of action, and was struggling to take that first step in the direction of wisdom.

I guess its just the way we are, we can all be smart but there are plenty of times we do something stupid. As long as we can learn by our mistakes then we are ok.

it depends on their daily life and their sense. there's nothing you can do to change their stupids, or, maybe you can try the stupid person did, strike the stupid person's head from back and maybe they'll smart :P (lol)
