A man is walking along a straight road. He notices the top of a tower subtending an angle A = 60o with the ground at the point where he is standing. If the height of the tower is h = 15 m, then what is the distance of the man from the tower?

Let position of man be at point A on the ground, the base of the tower be point B & the top of the tower be point C.
So we get a triangle which is right angled at vertex B.

Given angle BAC=60o.
l(BC)=15m
l(AB) is the distance between man from the tower.

Now,
tan(A)=l(BC)/l(AB) ....... opp side/adjacent side
thus
tan60=15/l(AB)
tan60=1.732

l(AB)=8.66 m
Thus 8.66 m is the distance between man from the tower.

Tan 60° = opposite side / adjacent side
Tan 60° = 15 / x = √3
x = 15/√3 = 15√3/3 = 5√3 = 8.66 m

sen 60º = √3/2
√3/2 = height/hyp
√3/2 = 15/hyp
√3 hyp = 15 x 2
hyp = 30 over √3
hyp = 30\/3 over (√3)²
hyp = 30√3 over 3
hyp = 10√3 m
Answer: The distance of the man from the tower is 10√3 m or approx. 17,32m.

Don't use tangent. We just have height and hypotenuse. Otherwise, you must use sen. For tangent you need have the height or the base - less hypotenuse.

Let

o = opposite side

15 = the opposite side

a = adjacent side

- - - - - - - - - - -

solving for adjacent side

tanθ = o/a

tan60° = 15/a

a(tan60°) = a(15/a)

a(tan60°) = 15

a(tan60°)/(tan60° = 15 / (tan60°)

a = 15/tan60°

a = 15 / 1.732050808

a = 8.660254038 m

a = 8.88 m Rounded to two decimal points

Draw a triangle that includes the pole, a line from the man to the top of the pole, and the line along the ground from the man to the bottom of the pole. Then remember that tanø = side opposite over side adjacent.

very purpose of Trigonometry is to find solution to such problems.
Here, adjacent side of the tan function will be the distance between the tower and the man.
Therefore, d = 15 cot(60)=8.66 m

you have formula in rectangle triangle

1/tg 60° = h/d 1.73

so d = h*1.73 = 26 m
