I've always seen in cowboy movies and such where men are in tough situations shaving with a knife or kabar. I'll admit I tried, didn't cut myself - then again I didn't apply much pressure. My question is have any of you successfully shaved with a kabar or any other high quality knife? (I don't recommend trying this, and am just curious whether anyone has done it already.)

I've used my Swiss Army knife a few times to shave.
You have to keep honing the blade to keep it extra sharp, but otherwise it gives a nice close shave.
I used the inside of my leather belt as a honing strop.
Once, I used the blade from a box cutter. That didn't work as well because it's too hard to hone it.

Whenever I finish making a knife I test it by seeing if it will shave my arm. Mind you keeping an edge that sharp for a long time would be difficult for a field or large knife... but it is possible to "shave" with them.

The knife has to be exceptionaly sharp and in my experience a Kabar won't work
