Some interesting answers. The reason that some say that apples are harmful, to anyone is the chemical in their seeds, which, if eaten in a very huge excess can cause stomach ache (which is colic in horses). This is only when one eats alot of apples though. Apples are a fine treat to feed your horse, and like any treat, I don't care what it is, it should be fed in moderation. A horse only needs 1-2 treats daily, other wise you can make him obese, which has a number of problems. Also only treat your horse if he does a behavior that you like, don't make treating a regular thing that your horse does nothing for. Treating should be done to reward a horse for a behavior that you like them doing. If you want to give your horse a treat give him one after a good ride, or after he does something that he doesn't really like to d0, or teach him a trick and give him a treat when he does it correctly. If your horse does something bad that day then don't give him any treats at all.
There are lots of treats you can feed your horse other than apples.
My horse likes the eat the following:
apples
carrots
oatmeal cookies
skittles
sour skittles
gummy fruits
popcorn
lollypops
jellybeans
horse cookies - these are really best for your horse
sweet bread
licorice
sweet feed cookies make with molassis
and other other things that have sugar! lol :)
But I only feed any of this to her after shes done something good that I want to reward, so she knows that se has to be good to get a treat. If you just treat regularly then your horse thinks that they deserve it for what ever and they can get a little pushy and sometimes mean. I have seen constant over treating lead to the horse ruling over the owner and becoming very mean and pushy.
Good luck with your horse!

In moderation no. They shouldn't have more than 2-3 a day.
