Buy a router! You will need to make sure the laptop and the desktop both have network interface cards. Crossover cable is not the best way to go!

The easiest way is with a "cross-over" cable. It is a regular CAT-5 ethernet cable, with a twist (literally) if you hold both connectors from either end, side by side, the colors of the wires will all be in the same place. The CAT-5 cable that you use to plug into your router or hub is usually "straight cable" - butt to butt the wires go straight through - side by side the colored wires will be mirrored.
For the cross-over connection to work you also need to have an ether port on both machines, and if you want leave that connected while retaining your current connection to the internet, you will need a switch, hub, router or second ether card in your desktop. A switch is the easiest, and you do not have to worry about what kind of CAT-5 you have, the switch will know, and work either way. The cross-over cable is only needed for direct-cable connection, from one machine to another with no extra hardware.
USB can be done, but I don't recomend it.
Getting a switch or router w/ ether cable is probably your best bet.
You can also check to see if your router from comcast is wireless ready - meaning all you need is for your laptop to have it too. Depending on your laptop it might already be, and it's not that expensive to get if it does not. Most cable and DSL providers, especially DSL ISP's are setting up new accounts with wireless ready modem/routers. I didn't have wireless and called mine, they upgraded my modem/router for free. If not, a small home wireless setup can be had for under $70, router and pcmcia wireless card or access point.
Some of these network items I refer to are combo units; modem/router, router/switch or they can be one or the other, depends on the model. Mine is a wireless/modem/router but I only use the modem and wireless parts with a seperate router and switch that I bought just for my application.
Good Luck!

The most headache-free answer is to buy a Router.
The router will connect to your Comcast, and both your xp's will connect to your router. The router will automatically create a network to share internet to both PCs. This network may also be used to share your printer.

plug your cable into both computer and then go to start-up menu and right click the My Network palces and choose properties a network connections windows shows with your connections in it you probably have the local area connection that's for the pluged ethernet cable, "do this for both computers" right click Local Area connection a local area connection properties window appear.
choose from the list that shows the internet protocol (TCP/IP) it must be the last one in the list, once you choose it press the properties button, a window appears where you place the IP of the computer put for one computer:
IP: 10.0.0.1 subnet mask 255.0.0.0
for the sencond computer
IP: 10.0.0.2 subnet mask 255.0.0.0
then ofcourse press ok
now for both computers to communicate you need to shut down your firewalls if any and your antivirus, if you have win XP SP2 shut down your firewall and SP2 firewall from the control panel "firewall"
Good luck
note the cable must be twisted pair cable

(a million) for the reason that your human being computer already have instantaneous LAN, then purchase USB wifi for your computer (see link for ad-HOC connection). or; (2) If both have RJ45 connectors, purchase a go-OVER LAN cable (in case you opt to connect without HUB. once you've hub, then it really is going to be without delay and under no circumstances go-over). Set their respective IPs. If you ought to hook up with the internet and want to connect the different to the internet even without ROUTER use a proxy server like FREEPROXY.
