You can buy a pill crusher. It works on the same principle as a soda can crusher. Then you mix the pill in apple sauce or something. Another alternative, if you don't mind paying a little extra for it, is that you can take the prescription to a compounding pharmacy. They can make almost all prescriptions into a liquid for you.

While I have a big gag reflex, if I first partially fill my mouth with liquid, then pills, then immediately continue with a drink, they wash right down no problems. I take several medications and this works well enough that I can take a small handful of pills all at once. Also, just very conciously relax your throat. Your conditioned, reflexive response is a tightened throat to reject a 'foreign object' from entering your body.

You can cut the pill in half. A pill cutter is available at any drug store (pharmacy store), or at Walmart (USA), Target (USA), Walgreens (USA), Longs Drug (USA), Costco (USA), Sams Club (USA).
You can crush the pills as long the pills are not enteric coated. A pill crusher is available at any drug store (pharmacy store), or at Walmart, Target, Walgreens, Longs Drug, Costco, Sams Club.
You can ask your doctor to substitute the medication in liquid form, if the medication requires a doctors order. You can buy a liquid form of medication if the medication is an over-the-counter drug (like Advil).

Since normal food is larger than an Advil, you must not be eating normal food either.
Eat it the same way you do your food, crush it and mix it in whatever fluid you are using for your nutrition.

Try hypnosis. You'd be surprised how not being able to swallow large pills really is all in your head.
Think about it. You swallow much larger masses when you eat your meals...

You can cut them into smaller pieces or crush them up and mix it into applesauce. If it's a capsule, pull it apart over some applesauce so the powder inside the capsule falls into the bowl. Then stir and eat. Make sure you get all the applesauce into you so you don't miss any of the medication.

At Walmart or other drugstores, they carry pill cutters- they work great and help with the bigger pills like antibiotics--- they also make a lot of drugs in liquid form-- cost a lot more and harder to find.
