Interesting question. I think I have achieved a good balance between my needs and my desires, and I am content. But then, I am retired from work. I am gradually developing a "retirement business," but at my own pace. I appreciate that not everyone is as lucky as I am.
I am reminded of Abram Maslow's concept of a hierarchy of needs. Rather than creating an arbitrary line between needs and desires, he visualized a pyramid arrangement of our needs, with those most necessary for survival at the bottom, supporting the more esoteric and finally the outright luxury. It is not a perfect metaphor, but it makes the point that you deal with the "drawing of water and hewing of wood" first, and then work your way up the heirarchy. However, if you do the zen-like attitude of putting a spiritual spin on your drawing of water and hewing of wood, you can be working on several needs/desires at one time.

No need for confusion.. Needs are actually very simple, and not much running about is really needed. Look at the quarrels, arguments, conflicts amongst people, colleagues or even friends and families... it is not about basic needs !
The problem is, desires become a need too soon before we realise, through the 'back-door' of our mind, and we get stuck to it as if it is a 'need', and start chasing it... !
It requires a well balanced mind, with readiness to re-assess periodically , our 'real' needs, to avoid being driven at a mad pace by our 'hidden desires' which project to our mind as "URGENT NEEDS" !
See, after getting addicted, even a medical doctor 'advices' a drunkard not to suddenly stop drinking ! It becomes a permitted "need " !!!

When I really! think about it I think I have totally lost my sense of need and desire, I think that ever since I was a little girl, I've learned desire and not need. It is an unfortunate thing that not many are able to differentiate between need and want, most of us grow up getting what we want. It's exactly what you said everything we need in life food water sleep, we all take those but then we need the comfort and the fast food and the purified water. We work like we don't need the money cause most of it we could do without, but we *need* our ...food and our water and our clothes....yeaaaah

it isn't going, besides the indisputable fact that that's not not a chance. some human beings do have it person-friendly, they don't ought to artwork flat out and characteristic a lot of issues surpassed on a plate while others artwork 10 circumstances harder yet get 10 circumstances a lot less. that is a chance to conquer it although you basically might want to be actual a kind of who works 10 circumstances harder and characteristic a can do approach, you sound perceptive and wise, take great thing about it, study, artwork and get your self the range of existence you want.

Every day people shoves things to my throat and tell me to do them. And i hate most of them. If ever do anything i like, then it's breaking the rules. Go figure.
