You will need space on the web to 'host' your site. You can do this via free hosts or via paid for host. If you have a free host - such as Lycos Tripod - then your web address is likely to be a long URL such as www.mysite.tripod.lycos.co.uk rather than your own domain name.

If you pay for a host then you will need to register and buy a domain name to allow people to find your website on the web.

Free hosts (such as http://www.tripod.lycos.co.uk) and paid for hosts (such as www.1and1.co.uk) both provide website building tools that allow you to build a simple site to host family photographs or a forum or news.

Alternatively if you wanted to simply write a blog then there are a large number of free blog hosting sites out there that will allow you to do this.

If you want to build a more complex site then you need to learn HTML and obtain a coding tool such as Microsoft FrontPage or Macromedia Dreamweaver. Register a domain name and buy some hosting space.

If you are looking for a simply presence on the web to see if you keep it updated I'd go for a free blog or hosting company first.

Microsoft is offering free webspace and will even throw in a free domain name. I did it. No strings.
