Yes the most obvious answer would be the Centaur,but there is
another aspect to this question.Would it be necessary that the
upper half be human and the lower half ,a horse which would definitely make it a centaur.Or is it possible that the upper half is horse and the lower human,for which there is no previously known mythological creature.

A race descended from one of two brothers;
Lapithus and Centaurus
Lapithus is normal and his progeny are seen as the ancestors of the ancient Greeks.
Centaurus is deformed and ends up mating with a horse, his progeny becoming the 'Centaurs'.

The Centaurs are eventually destroyed by the Lapithians centuries later in a battle over a woman named Hippodameia.
