When a tree is cut the xylem cells can still be active for a while, watering a cut christmeas tree will keep the tree green longer and help keep the tree from completely drying out and becoming a fire hazard.

The tree will pretty much tell you. Make sure you cut off the bottom before putting it in the stand - add water (and a little sugar) - check at the end of the day and add water if needed. Check againin the morning. In the beginning it will probably take more, and then level out. Usually once a day is enough but keep it filled.

When you buy it from a store .. Cut at least an inch or two from the stump . So the tree can absorb the water .. I usually start the day with warm sugar water then start the next day with regular cold water . The sugar water will help the tree being green longer

token: By all means, water. Add some sugar to the water and this will help extend the life of the tree and keep it from drying out and becoming a fire hazard.

Did you or can you put it in a stand that can hold water? When I get a tree, I always try to put it in a tree stand that can hold water, as I am a heat freak and want to avoid drying out the tree.

Yes, often , in a stand - not the cross wood they sell it with . . . unless it is artificial , then you need to water it to rinse off the dust !
