"Breaking the ice" is just a general statement people use when someone in a crowd or a more personal one on one situation talks first. Have you ever been around people and it felt very uncomfortable b/c no one was saying anything. Then someone says "Hey what cha think about them Giants?" or "What about this weather we're haven?" something like that? That's considered breaking the ice.

I think it should be called "melting the ice." What it means is a warming up - a way to get comfortable with someone to open the ways for further communication.
