D.A. stands for Dearness allowance
Dearness allowance (D.A.) is part of a person's salary. D.A. is calculated as a percent of the basic salary. This amount is then added to the basic salary along with house rent allowance to get the total salary.
The DA is given for those in certain limits of basic salary and revised for certain points of increase in cost of living index.
Through successive pay commissions and revision of basic salaries, DA or at least part of it, is merged with the basic salary.

It is Dearness Allowance, meant to compensate for inflation. It is also called COLA (cost of living allowance).
