This may be hard to understand for some people, but during Saddam's reign, things were stable. After the Coalition Provisional Authority effected De-Baathification, the civil services and existing military were disbanded. During the chaos, many insurgent groups formed. Terrorists from other nations had already infiltrated Iraq.
Through what appears to be careful planning from the foreign terrorists, civil war was fomented.
Now the Sunnis and Shi'ites are fighting for their own state. The occupation from the U.S. drove these groups to what they are now: secretarian forces trying to usurp one another.
As of now, the war will not stop. It will only spread to other regions as Iraqi refugees flee the escalating civil war. As we see from other civil wars, such as Lebanon and Rwanda, the refugees from war-torn nations bring the strife with them for decades to come. As you said in your question, there is no end in sight.

The U.S. underestimated Iraq, and never thought Iraqis would ever fight back and see "liberation" as an occupation. Believe me people, this is NOT Kuwait. This is Iraq, a country that once had the fourth largest ARMY IN THE WORLD. Well trained, well equipped by all Russia's most advanced weapon machines which at that time were way better than any American made war machine. Did anyone of you ever asked yourself, where did all that went?, did you really think a country like that would sit and watch 18 year old roll their streets carrying modified M-6, and kicking dust from their Humvee?.

There has to be a better solution for this war, and this solution is that other fellow Arabs including the Arab League should intervene the country and help restore peace, instead of making the U.S pay for their mistake in the first place.

The country is slipping into civil war. The people themselves are quarelling against each other. The Sunnis vs. Shiites, the Clerics vs. Sunnis, etc.. It's no longer America's war.

The Shiite's are out for revenge against the Sunni's. The Sunni's terrorized the Shiite's for years. Now they get to pay for what they have done. The Sunni's are fighting for their stinking lives now. When they should have done what was right before instead of remaining silent. They should all renounce they false prophet Muhammed and accept Jesus Christ as their Saviour. Better late than never!!
