okay, well, since someone already made the Richard Gere joke, take the poor thing to the SPCA. They have whole adoption sections dedicated to rabbits and rodents.

If you want to get rid of it but are unwilling to give it away, what kind of answer are you looking for?

It sounds like you want someone to tell you to kill it or put it out in the wild. Of course, those are both unacceptable solutions.

As others have suggested, either find someone among your friends or family willing to take it, or contact the SPCA.

I wouldn't worry too much about hurting the feelings of the person who gave you the gerbil; a living creature is not an appropriate or thoughtful gift, unless specifically asked for.

You can give it away,If whoever gave it to you asks about it,,just say that you didnt have enough time to give it the attention it needed & someone who truely wanted it,,gave it a better home.
