It depends on whether the dog regards the owners as the dog's " alpha ", or considers him/ her self the " alpha " of the 'human pack' that she/ he is with. those that consider themselves 'alpha' will show love by licking, because they inherit certain licking behaviors from Wolves...two of which are (a) licking wounds (own or those of others) to aid in healing, and (b) puppies who are weaned but cannot yet hunt licking the jaws of adults who have just come back from the hunt, trying to get them to regurgitate partially digested meat for the puppy to eat.
Humans can and often do interfere, 'teaching' dogs to show love by licking, but this does cause a constant confusion deep in the mind of the dog involved.
Otherwise, dogs often show love by leaning against the person they love, and/or rubbing the 'scent gland' parts of their face against the person they love, 'marking' him / her as 'belonging' to that dog......

Dogs are highly social creatures and will show their affection for their owner in many ways. Just wanting to be near you and play with you is a strong sign of affection. Wanting to be petted by you is another sign. From a social standpoint, if a dog wants to lick your chin or face, they are trying to signal that they are subservient to you in the chain of command. If a dog tries to get on top of you or mount your leg, they are trying to demonstrate dominance and this behavior should not be tolerated.

Dogs are pack animals and therefore the social behavior is very important to them. In extreme cases dogs have defended their owners from attack and even saved them from other dangers such as fire. However, this is part of their desire to defend and protect another member of the "pack," rather than a demonstration of what humans have called "love."

Every dog is different. If you maintain consistent control and demonstrate your affection for them, they you can count on a lifetime of love from them.

Dogs are very loyal and faithful animal. Dogs are in deep love of their owners. They show their love by liking of their tongue on the foot and shoes of their owners. They respect their owners very much by obeying them and sitting near them and by kissing their shoes.

dogs can show many different ways of showing their owners that they love them. They will sniff you, cuddle up with you, look at you lovingly and caringly, they will lick you and not bark at you (unless you are playing with them), they will protect you when you are in a dangerous situation, and they will always be with you, no matter if their is another animal coming into the home, and they will be extremely loyal to you.
