That's an excellent question and I can't fathom the two thumbs downs this Q received. (I just countered with a thumbs up).
I'm not sure if it can be done. I think short of the next US administration having a referandum and asking the Iraqi's what they'd like to do, anything else is futile. The ramifications of this mistake are going to be felt for decades. It's very unfortunate that there are people who even resent the question being asked here. That disturbs me.

you will be surprised to learn how many Iraqis do not hate us but think we have given them the opportunity to live without Saddam. Perhaps they will someday make peace between the various religious groups and stop killing themselves but it hasn't happened in centuries..Maybe now?

Unfortunately, making peace may not be up to us. Substitute the word "Muslims" for "Iraqis" in your sentence and you'll understand my meaning.

Who says we have to make peace with them? These are barbarians, or haven't you noticed? You don't make peace with them, you kick their butts around a little and tell them to behave or we're coming back to rub them out too.
Peace in that hell-hole part of the world? Give me a break!

Let them keep killing each other unnecessarily like they have been for centuries. Why should we make peace with them when they can't make peace with themselves?
