I've installed SP2 on hundreds of computer with very very few issues. The few problems that I have ran into were generally due to the firewall on small home networks where there was some file sharing between the networked computer. The firewall is easily disabled in the control panel. What you perhaps should ask is what am I risking by not installing SP2. I would say you are significantly more at risk by not having all of the updates and security enhancements that come with SP2, and also without SP2 you cannot install many other updates released since SP2. I would also highly recommend you consider installing Internet Explorer 7 if you computer has at least 512 MB of memory. IE 7 has some significant security enhancements but does take more memory to run.

SP2 has been out for a while and the major bugs have been patched. It is now much more secure then SP1. The SP2 firewall is not a good firewall to start with, but the security paches are essential. Install SP2 and then go immediatly to the microsoft windows update site and download all the current security updates. Your system will be much more secure.

Yes, Service Pack 2 is worth installing mainly for improved security. Major computer manufacturers recommend SP2, but in many cases they also have a list of revised drivers and other software patches that should be installed before SP2 (see link below).

I strongly suggest you to install it.
See, the SP2 is not just the firewall, it has corrections to make the system more stable. If you have the sp1, you are running in a OS that is almost 5 years old. The SP2 was released in the 2004, so it isn't that old. I understand that is less propense to virus, but I'm not really sure. So it's almost logic to want a more stable and secure machine.

You should install SP2 because:
(from a useful site)
# Is XP SP2 buggy? will it slow my PC down? Should I wait to install it until after it is tested more?
I have been testing various versions of this service pack for 6 months now. There were some "bugs" in the early "beta" versions, but this final PUBLIC release is very stable!
I have personally been installing this Windows service pack 2 on every kind of computer I can get my hands on and only had one reboot issue that resolved itself on a second attempt!
As for slowing down computers.... not something I have come across although in theory as the "prefetch" cache will be rebuilt you may see some initial sluggishness.
General XP Tips:
- If you have less than 512Mb of RAM installed then you should look at getting more memory...
- If you are having problems with a slowing PC then test your PC for Spyware or Malware with a program like SpySweeper.

Some other programs require you to have sp2 intsalled to run. Honestly unless you come across something that needs it you might not want to install it.

Yes, because if you do NOT... you will no longer recieve ANY microsoft updates ever again. That allows for MANY hackers to get into your machine
