If you are under 18 years old, you are required to take a safe boating course. These are usually about 8 hours long, and are done by either the State Police, Coast Guard Auxillary, or Power Squadron. Unfortunately no license is required for Pleasure Craft. If you are looking to work commercially and/ or take passengers you need a U.S. Coast Guard license. If you have the required sea days, and know the material, you can be evaluated, and sit for the license at the nearest USCG REC, but if you know nothing about the buisness, you can go to a small school for limited licenses like Sea School, or Houston marine. If you have time, like four years, and are really interested in becoming a merchant marine, the best thing to to do is apply to a maritime college Like Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Main Maritime, SUNY Maritime, Kings Point, Cal. Maritime, or Texas A+M. These Colleges, upon completion will give you a bachelors of science degree, and an Unlimited License with all the certificates.

definite there are acutally, once you've your boating license and your over even if the minimum age is to get your boating license, which i imagine is 13 or 12 or some thing, than you may force it yet WITH some different person on the BOAT. both someone over the age of 21 or yet another boaters approved man or woman. you have to be over the age of 16 to be operating it with the help of your self, than once your 21 you dont have any restricitons.

I can not answer for AL but in most states you are required to take a safe boating course to operate a motor vessel. These are offered by the agencies in the previous answer. You can take some of them online. www.usps.org
