Yes. and yes. My father was raised in the deep south in the 1930's. He loathed and despised anyone who wasn't WASP.

I outgrew this foolishness. Regardless of his shortcomings; I loved him when he died.

Nope,I didn't grow up in a racist house. Some kids at my school were racist. My whole family thinks racist people are idiots. They never taught me to hate other races.I don't see why anybody would want to teach something like that.I can't stand to be around one race.It drives me crazy. It always has to be diverse with me.

My dad wouldn't let us date black men. My dad wouldn't even let me bring over a friend of mine because the kid was black.

What's odd is that my dad is East Indian (just as dark as many black men) and my mom . . . is black! If you look at my mom, you wouldn't know it though. We joke that she "missed the color train." She is VERY light skinned.

Dad was raised in a small country where there is rampant hatred for every race that is there. In fact, there have been several killings there recently after a group has tried to unify the country. It's sad.

My dad has DRASTICALLY mellowed though. He's realized his errors. He's even OK with my little sister dating a black man now. :)

Through all of this, my parents taught me to respect everyone, period.

Not really. My parents were very open towards people of different races and religions.

At least, until 9/11. I can't tell you the number of times I've heard things about those "Damn middle easterners" since then. It breaks my heart.

My parents were great with me, but my partner's parents are horrible. They despise anyone who is middle eastern, asian, black, or even indonesian. They also cannot tolerate muslims and they detest gay's. They openly admit they dont like any of these kinds of people too.

I wont argue with them because its like talking to a brickwall. Their ignorance is just absolutely ludicrous. My partner was even racist......and i think that came from his upbringing with his parents. After dating him for a couple of months and then finding out what he was like - i tore him apart when he verbally attacked an asian man in the street. It was very simple - i gave him an ultimatum..."If you dont learn to accept other cultures and traditions then i dont want you as a part of my life". We sat down for hours and talked about it. Now 5 years later he is accepting of one person as the next and he cant believe what he was like back then.

I never meant to change him - he had to do it by himself.

No and no to your two question. Racism is completely alien to me and I cannot understand how a racist's mind works.
