How you texture ceilings depends on the material used, and the look you want to achieve.

Many textures can be applied with a hopper gun, some are applied with rollers. You can use a thinset joint compound and a pattern cut foam roller, or brushes, knives.. even mops... to achieve different looks.

My recommendation is to do a simple search on the internet, for various types of ceiling textures, and decide on the look you wish to achieve...then go from there. Hopper guns, and other texturing/finishing tools can be bought or rented.

Have Fun.

there is a machine that blows that stuff on, or you can use stucco and a notched trowel. The Notches determine the texture. another way is to add sand to paint and spray it on

You can also role stucco on, just like paint. Easy and it covers great.
