So I was expecting a baby. She was due 12/31/06 ...on 12/12 There was no movement ... After approx 4-5 hrs. at the hospital we were back at home. The next day a different hospital visit was made where labor was induced and my little girl was gone. How does umbilical cord strangulation happen? How can it be prevented? and Why didn't they take my baby when she was alive?

The first poster was right- there is nothing that you did that caused the cord strangulation, and nothing you could have done to prevent it. I am shocked that the hospital sent you home when there was obviously something wrong with the baby. It is too soon to think of this now, but later you may be able to make a case for malpractice if you choose. No amount of money can bring your child back, but such a case may be an important wake-up call to the hospital and a warning to other patients. I can't imagine losing a child, and it is umfathomable what you must be going through. Please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss.

with the baby constantly moving around it can happen. I am so sorry for your loss. The only people who can answer the q. on why you were sent home is the hospital. When you are able to deal with it contact the first hospital about getting a copy of your records. You can get a HIPAA rights flyer which will tell you what you are able to get but I believe it is just about all of them. Your OB may also be able to explain their reasoning. If you aren't satisfied with the explanations and decide to sue your copy of your records may save sometime. I wish you all of the best.

I am so sorry for your loss. I can't imagine what I would do in your situation. It's so terrible to lose a child and to lose one without having even met her. You have my deepest sympathy.

I think your doctor or a counselor is really the best person to answer your questions. It seems like a complicated situation and they could help you deal with it so much better. Your OB/GYN would probably be able to help you watch for it in your next pregnancy too.

I' M SO SORRY FOR YOUR LOST. 1ST OF ALL THE 1ST HOSPITAL SHOULD HAVE KEPT YOU THERE. WHAT THE DIFF IN HAVE YOUR BABY 18 DAYS EARLY. I DON'T KNOW IF THIS TRUE OR NOT I KNEW WHEN I HAD MY LAST BABY SHE HAD THE CORD WRAP AROUND HER NECK 2X'S. MY MOTHER AND OTHER WILL ALL WAYS TELL TO STOP REACH WITH MY ARMS ABOVE MY HEAD OR YOU GOING TO HAVE THE CORD AROUND YOUR BABY NECK. I STILL THINK THAT THE 1ST HOSPITAL IS AT FAULT. AND ONCE AGAIN I'M SO SORRY FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY LOSS.

Wow, I am sooooo sorry. I think it occurs very rarely and just a freak accident, no preventing it. I hope you have a lot of support around you at this very trying time.
