The doctor regenerates.
This allows the show to progress when the lead actor decides to quit. The original actor, William Hartnell, fell ill in 1966 and couldn't continue in the role. The producers decided to recast the role to Patrick Troughton, although I don't believe back then the term regenerate was used.
In later series, it was used when the lead actor decided to leave the show (or in some cases to boost the ratings), to enable the show to continue. We've now seen 10 doctors (David Tennant is the official tenth), and still have 3 more to see as the doctor has 12 regenerations in total.

Like all Time Lords, the Doctor has the ability to "regenerate" his body when near death, allowing for the convenient recasting of the lead actor. While a Time Lord can regenerate twelve times, the Doctor has gone through this process 9 times so far . . .
First Doctor, played by William Hartnell (1963–1966)
Second Doctor, played by Patrick Troughton (1966–1969)
Third Doctor, played by Jon Pertwee (1970–1974)
Fourth Doctor, played by Tom Baker (1974–1981)
Fifth Doctor, played by Peter Davison (1981–1984)
Sixth Doctor, played by Colin Baker (1984–1986)
Seventh Doctor, played by Sylvester McCoy (1987–1989, 1996)
Eighth Doctor, played by Paul McGann (1996)
Ninth Doctor, played by Christopher Eccleston (2005)
Tenth Doctor, played by David Tennant (2005–present)

Well, every so often, the main actor leaves to the show and is replaced by a new actor. This is explained on screen as "Regeneration"

I don't watch this particular series of Dr. Who, but judging from what I know of past Doctors, I'd say he died and was recreated in a new person. That didn't take long, did it?

He "changed skin"- apparently he does this after so many years, like molting.
