What ineffable nonsense! TV is to sell things, or, in the case of cable, to sell itself. Spare us the post-modern twaddle!

I think if you use it in the sense that everything is fact, it might brain wash your concept of collecting information while you are relaxing. If you have cable everyone has a trail just like a Internet trail. The question should be is TV addicting for disabled people? I am talking about people that view TV for 8-12 hours per day because they never leave the house or lack creative hobbies. I don't know about average people, we simply do not have the time for hours of relentless reruns. The Internet is bad enough.

I think your question is a good one. I don't watch alot of TV, but when I do I notice that I don't really think much during that time period. I kind of just shut my brain off, and just absorb the input sent out over the airwaves. On the other side of the coin, I also notice that when I don't watch TV I'm constantly thinking. Whether it be constructive thinking or not, at least it's not just vegetating on the couch.
It's amazing how much research goes into product sales, and propaganda to influence the masses. The powers that be realize that every home in America has a TV. What better way to influence people, than to do it in a way that's disguised as entertainment.

That's pretty much true nowadays, although your question is false, it does not apply only to TV's.
In our current time, people just perceive information and accept it without processing it, and then internalize it. Notice how if a news source says something in the morning, everyone will stare at the person who doesn't know about it by lunchtime. The same goes for teenagers and young people, if a rumor spreads, almost everyone automatically believes the information, and it's very hard to erase.
I think it's a very efficient way of controlling the masses. Probably not moral or just, but efficient.

Reg: T.v. a form of social control
Yes, right on. Yes, T.V. has brain washed america since it started.. I remember growing up which 1970, 1980 and 1990 everyone watched T.V. and if it wasn't on T.V. then it didn't exist...Everyone watch Channel 7 Movie of the week on Wendsday or Friday...Everyone knew the show Roots and everyone knew everyone else as long as you watched t.v..
So, we were connected through the T.V. shows...This is what kept us together...
The funny thing is that I am Mexican American which I also was brain washed and the only person who looked like me or anyone else was Erick Estrada who was puerto rican.. But, it was my little nich of hollywood that I was o.k...
So, yes T.V. is a social control issue... Today with the internet everything is changing.. Yes, we all do our own thing..
in 1990, I started working full time and I haven't watched t.v. for the past 25 years.. It is great because, I don't really care... I hear the shows are stupid...
I am free.... It's funny, I still meet people who don't know one thing about the internet, but they watch T.v. 24/7... That is sad....

A covered up way of brainwashing individuals through entertainment. Only if you're weak enough to believe it.
