People who don't know and don't care just keep themselves busily happy living their purposeless existence and pursuing their frivolous desires.
Only the smartest are aware, and can see whatever that is which is wrong with society, and humanity as a whole. That's why they depressed about it.

My guess...suicide is pretty much always caused by depression. Depression results, as I understand it, from a chemical imbalance that causes, among other things depressive thinking patterns. Those patterns include unhealthy obsession (whatever that is) and all or nothing thinking. It seems possible that those sorts of thinking patterns could be viewed as intense focus which could be quite useful if you're studying something. In fact, I could see where it could make you a very good student and the result would likely be that you would seem smart. They do say that depression seems to affect higher IQ people more (that's a factoid I picked up somewhere) so your claim in your question is right, maybe my explanation is true, maybe not. I am NOT a doctor or psychologist. I've had a couple of really sharp friends come down with depression and there's just no reason to let it go untreated - if it doesn't kill you, it'll just ruin your life.

Not sure this is true, is this info based on a study? Even if there was a study to support this among smart or intelligent people, it would be difficult to find out why they committed suicide since they are dead.

Anyway...intelligence is hard to measure...sure IQ tests do that...but only a certain type of intelligence mainly that of math, English, history, and such. People can be smart in different ways that tests don't measure. My point is this...you can still be intelligent with a low IQ score,e.g., a person can be intelligent at reading people, coming up with ideas, abstract thinking, creativity, etc. For example, Albert Einstein wasn't good at math yet, he developed concepts way ahead of his time.

A: Ignorance is not always bliss...otherwise, why would the pharmaceutical companies be profiting so much from anti-depressant/anxiety medication? Unless....you think that a large % of people in the US are the "smartest".

I believe you are making on an assumption on your part without any backup facts or studies.

Although my own opinion is that I have seen people so brilliant that they can't shine for long. There are some who use so much of their intelligence that they don't have time to think or be concerned about superficial things. Some can over focus on things to the point that a train could come through their house and they wouldn't notice. Who really is there to say that is normal or abnormal. Who is to say what is happy?

There is a saying "ignorance is bliss" At times it might be. but then how are we to judge the happiness or the lack of it in anyone?

The brain is a mystery. I think you need to have a study to quote before you make a statement like you made

Plutarch quoted another famous Greek in stating that all geniuses have 'atrabilious' tempers, which are temperaments that suit your description.
But my question is--who are these smart people who kill themselves? Is it statistically true that the smartest people are the most likely to kill themselves, or are their suicides the most memorable?
And what do you mean by 'kill themselves'? Many a fool kills his/herself by accident--
Is your impression able to be validated such that an answer may be provided?

genius people focus all their mind on being smart and figuring out how to do this, while the happy people are carefree and just focusing on everything around them, which is healthier, because they have a social life and a balance of things.

Actually, statistics show that higher intelligence leads to a longer life, lower suicide rate, and higher likelyhood of healthy lifestyles.

Glad to clear up the misconception.

Too much thinking. The latter are the lucky ones. (sigh)
Why are the most intelligent people not the richest? Do they know something the rest don't?

There is a difference between intelligence and wisdom. There is also a difference between those who have a relationship with God and those that don't.

You will find out as you get older and wiser.
