I have a Chinese name as well as an American name. My Chinese name is pronounced "cha lei". Cha means family/home and is my generation name. This means that all my cousins on my father's side has this character in names. It ties us as cousins on the father's side.

The origin of the second character of my name is more interesting. I was born during a monsoon which blew out my mother's hospital room window. In commemorate the events surrounding my birth, my parents wanted to use the word "lightning" or lei but the meaning is too masculine for a girl. To get around this, my parents changed the intonation of the word. In the Chinese language, the singular pronunciation of a word can mean different things depending on the intonation used. (Kinda like putting the emphasis on different syllables on an English word.) So using a different intonation for "lei" changed the meaning from lightning to flower bud-a much more suitable name for a girl. So my Chinese name is family/home="Cha" and flower bud="lei".

My American name, I picked out when I immigrated to the US. At 4 years old, I chose the name Amy.

My name is Alexandra, shortened to Xandi since before I was born. When my mom was just barely pregnant with me, she and my dad were playing volleyball with some total strangers, one of whom (a woman) had the last name Alexander. Her teammates kept yelling things like "Get it, Alexander!" My mom, being somewhat lazy-tongued like many Americans, thought, "Why don't they just call her Xandi?" And from that moment on, I had a name!

Oddly enough, if I had been a boy I would have been called not Alexander but Austin. I'm not sure why they didn't just go with a masculine version of Xandi, but I can tell you, the doctor who delivered me was SOOO happy that I was a girl. Seems there was another doctor in the hospital whose last name was Austin, against whom my doctor held a bit of a grudge...

I was a big General Hospital fan. I named my daughter after Liz Taylor who was playing Helena Cassadine at the time. I fell in love with the name, only I thought they were saying Elaina. Elaina is what I named my daughter, but I never would've come up with it if I hadn't been watching GH and got the name wrong.

My parents named me after my great aunt (Katherine). Love the delivery doc story above. I'd love to name my future little girl after Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice.

My name was suppose to be "Christopher". Well, that's when my parents thought they were having a boy. When I came out a girl they struggled to find a name for me. My mother wanted to name me "Christina" but my father didn't. So, while flipping through a magazine at the hospital my father came across a french model named "Andrea" and decided to name me that.
