Or do you feel the way Elaine Benis does, i.e. that it's the equivalent to receiving a box full of cash? I personally love them, a lot of my relatives have lost touch with what kind of books, music, etc. I prefer. So in the end, I think it's very considerate, it shows they want me to have a gift I can really enjoy instead of just randomly guessing. Plus, if you're like me and a little short on holiday cash, gift cards can be used to buy others gifts.
Yet, some people hate them, and consider it very rude.

Your opinions on the subject?

That's a good point, who gives it is an important factor. The closer the person is, the nicer it is to give an actual gift. Yet, my boyfriend and I still sometimes use certificates for stocking stuffers.. go figure!

Gifts are great if a person knows your tastes If a person is just trying to save time, gift cards are really lame . This is still better than nothing... oh by the way I'm getting you the same thing I got you last year.... merry christmas

I'd rather have a gift. I've been given both, and while very useful, gift cards are just not as fun or suprising on Christmas Day. Besides, the only person who really buys me gifts is hubbin, and I give him a list of EXACTLY what I want, how much, where to get it, etc. so he can just choose one and I'll be happy with whatever he gets me.

I'm in the group the feels gift cards and certificates are a perfect way of saying that you don't know anything about the recipient or care to take the time to find out.

If you receive a gift that isn't to your taste, return it and get something you do like.

I personally enjoy gift cards cause I'm hard to shop for and I don't wan to hurt any ones feelings and seem like don't appreciate the gift but I'm also a person that love me and I often buy the things I want need and desire I guess what I'm saying is I have all the things I want and need and some things I don't so that make it hard to shop for me And I also have expensive taste and all my friends know that so they know gift cards r cash is the best for me.

Depends on who got the "gift" for me. If it was my parents I have not lived with in over 9 years I would prefer the gift card. If it were my husband of 8 years I would prefer a "gift" he picked out based on "hopefully" knowing my likes & dislikes.
I would never consider it a "rude" gift,, but again depending on the person giving it I might get a little hurt that was the best they could come up with.

A gift...always.
I don't think they are rude, I prefer to even get a hand written card than a gift cirtificate. I have gifts (and cards) that people gave me decades ago and I like remembering the giver. If I shop for my own gift, it feels like I bought myself a gift.

A gift because it is so much fun opening up presents. Best Wishes and Happy Holidays.

I like gift certificate, then I can go and get what I really need. Not that I am against getting gifts, they are nice too.

My family members always get me the right gift. My friends can get a little off track, so I would prefer a gift card from them.

i think gifts show you put more thought into the person. gift cards are nice for people you dont know really well though, a good first present perhaps.
