I see all these " text documents" and " temp folders and files" and I want to know if I can delete them safely.
Why are they there?
What other things can I look for to delete?
thanks!

The Internet temporary files can be deleted safely. They occupy a good lot of space

Generally the temp files are 'good to go' as it were, but if you are running windows XP or similiar, let the computer decided.

Here are some general outlines.

1) Go thru your files yourself and see if there are any old files, backups, junk, photos (always check photos - they hog the most space), zip files that have been extracted, etc. If you find them and no longer need them, delete them

2) Next go to add/delete programs and purge any programs that you never or no longer run. Use the associated uninstall program since it does the best job of trying to erase all the pieces .

3) Now run CLEANUP (its in the accessories folder). It will look for other stuff and give you a suggestion list. Review the list and accept or reject the pieces. It will delete your temp files, backup files you missed and so on,.

4) Now run DEFRAG (from the same accessory folder).

THats about all you can do for a basic tunep.

(TEMP files are created by the computer to handle or save information or folders on a limited basis... you can generally delete them without too much risk)

ok..

good luck

Go to Start | Control Panel. From there, choose "Performance and Maintenance." From there, choose "Free Up Space on Your Hard Disk." This will remove any unnecessary files, including temp files and your recycle bin. Also, delete your cookies. To do this, go to "My Computer," then choose the local disk (c:) drive. Go to "Documents and Settings" and choose the appropriate username (if there are more than one). There will be folder titled "Cookies". You can delete them from there. Finally, you should defragment your computer on a regular basis, this is also available under "Performance and Maintenance."

go to you local drive and do disk cleanup and defrag it. Delete all of your temp. files and all files that you don't need. If you have a memory stick you can keep a lot of stuff on those and your comp. will run faster to. Temp. files are just things that you have done on the net. You don't need them. That will help a little. Go to start>control panel>add remove programs then if there are a lot of programs that you don't use, take them off. You can always get them again if you need them. Well not all of them, do research if you don't know a lot about a program. Most of them you can re download off of their site. I do that. When I need a program I download it and erase it when I am finished! It helps a lot.

anything in the My Documents folder (files only) are safe to delete. Anything files that you see with an extension such as ".dll" or ".ini", do not touch!!! try unistalling some programs that you don't use. You can up the efficiency of your hard-drive by degragmenting it(defragmenting your hard drive does not free up anyspace, but increases hard-drive search time). You might also want to consider adding another hard-drive to yor system, either internal or external. That will free up a lot of space on your main hard-drive and increase system efficieny. try to avoid downloading software that searches out old and unused files due to the risk of infection or spyware. If you have no idea what to do, call a computer repair/maintainance facility and ask them what to do.

Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs->Delete any programs you are not using

Defrag your computer (Start-Accessories-System Tools-Defragment)
Also Disc Cleanup, Scan Disk (if on your pc)

Delete files that are not needed

All this will clear up some space on your computer and make it go a bit faster

sure., there is more effective than one type of memory and typically workstation illiterate persons confuse both significant varieties. RAM and HDD. Hardrives are purely area for saving information. imagine of it as an empty room to fill with packing packing containers.. at the same time as the RAM is extra like the length of an engine (or particularly the gasoline, the length being the processor velocity). So in case you want your workstation load speedier and run courses speedier you want extra RAM. You reported you've 2 gigs it truly is a lot yet one extra 2 would make the international of distinction. Beofre you get all gung hoe and purchase extra RAM even with the reality that you want to verify that your mom board can settle for that a lot RAM. visit a keep and tell them you want to be certain in case you may have extra RAM extra .. in case your 80 Gig HD is operating out of area you need to improve yet this received't make it speedier in any respect (nicely there is onboard RAM on HD's many times 4-8 MB's even with the undeniable fact that it truly is minimum) I 'll end puzzling you.. RAM = speedier HD area = area

You can use a program called ccleaner to remove as much junk as possible, it removes them automatically

apart from it if you copy your documents, images, music, videofiles etc from your hard disk to a cd or a dvd and then delete them from your hard disk ; it will free some space on the hard disk. Here are some more tips on the link below

Go to start (on your computer) and go to control panel. Click on Add/Delete Programs and when you run your mouse over each program, it should tell you how often you use it. If you rarely/never use it, delete it!
Also, you shoud defragment your harddrive, what that does is clear up space by reorganizing your files and getting rid of unusued/bad space.
Go to control panel, and click on performace and maitinence. There you should see two options to clear up space!
Hope this helps alittle bit!

Go to the control panel, then go to the "add or remove programs" icon. It shows the last time you used a program. If you haven't used a program in a long time, chances are you don't really need it. You can delete it then.
