Does anyone know how tv and radio componys know how many people are watching or listining?

Tv uses neilson ratings and radio uses something similar.

A percentage of people are surveyed, then the companies just multiply the numbers.

So, and this probably isn't possible, say the complete viewing audience is 100 million, and the companies survey 1 million people, they have a 1% of the full audience. If then 2% of that million, surveyed say that they watched a particular programme, they can just multiply it by the relevant numbers to get their viewing figures.
