I started buying as soon as I found out i was pregnant. Diapers and things that both boy and girl could wear in all sizes. Plus all the things you never have enough of like blankets, socks, wipes, soaps and lotions. Be careful buying formula ahead of time, your baby may not tolerate the type of formula you buy and you will be stuck with it and that stuff is too expensive to just have to throw away. Congrats.

Whenever you feel like it. There are a few colors that are unisex and can be used for either boy or girl. I shopped the whole time and when my son was born, I didn't have to fork out a lot of money to buy things because I already had them. Plus it is a lot easier to buy stuff early, when you aren't huge and 8 months along. Or wait until you know what you are having. Plus you will get a lot of stuff at showers and from the grandparents. Good luck. Just do what you feel is best for you...

I bought a few little things in the weeks right after I found out, and I bought some boy things right after I found out what I was having, but for the most part I waited until I saw what I received at my baby showers (I had 2). Several people gave me cards with gift cards in them, and I was able to use them to purchase most of the things I wanted but didn't receive.
And it helped that the crib he sleeps in is something of a 'family heirloom', something that's been passed down through a few generations. My dad refinished it and re-did the bars so that the gap between them was a proper size, so we didn't have to buy one of those.

i started buying little things early...BIG MISTAKE
i strongly urge pregnant women to not give into the "a little here, a little there" buying attitude....by the time my shower came, i had so many duplicates of things i had to make several trips to serveral different stores to exchange things!!!! things like clothes and toys should be bought after your shower. (you will not only get a lot of things you register for, but also TONS of stuff you would never have thought about buying!!!)
as for things like furniture, i started to get the room together around 6 months...most of the time you end up ordering furniture and it takes time to get to you, so you can estimate to get the room done by the middle of your 7th month....
have your car seat bought and installed in your car by your 8th month...you never know, you could go into labor early (and you cant take the baby home without one!)

I started to get a few things once I found out what I was having (which was 18 weeks) I then waited until after my baby shower to see what I got (34 weeks), and then after that I got everything else I needed.

I started shopping for little things, the weekend after I found out and it was confirmed by a doctor...
The big things came as I could afford them..little by little, untill my child was born..
and I did not know the sex of my baby..I just bought things that either a girl or a boy could use and wear...

You usually want to wait till you are in your 2nd trimester as the risk of misscarriage decreases. After that is really up to the parents to be & if the want gender nuteral or pink for girl & blue for boy you usually wait till about 17 to 20 week ultrasound

My friends started buying diapers and formula almost as soon as they found out she was pregnant... a pack/jar a week... they had tons... and when they had to buy other stuff they needed they did it through out the pregnancy...
Seems like a pretty good idea
