My friend is a lesbian. She is strong minded, and takes care of her elderly parents. Her parents were immigrants. They are minorities. She is reasonable, very smart, very talented, very artistic, good looking, polite, diplomatic and knows how to handle people. Her parents English speaking skills are limited and they are poor. My friend has done a good job for herself and can do even better. My friend is very responsible and has great follow through. She is honest and sincere.

Why is her white female heterosexual co worker antagonistic towards her? Angry and hostile everyday?

Maybe the co-worker is jealous because SHE actually has lesbian tendencies and is embarrassed about it. She looks at your friend who is successful and happy and open about her orientation, and she is envious!

My knee jerk reaction is the co-worker is jealous. Sounds like your friend has it all going on, and the co-worker probably secretly wishes she were half so put together. Also, if she is one of those heteros that has a problem with gays, period, it probably chaps her even more to know that your friend has all those wonderful attributes and is also (gasp!) a lesbian! Bottom line - some people are just miserable human beings, and will spew their darkness wherever they think they can. I hope your friend is able to hold her head up and live a happy, healthy, whole life despite having to work with someone who would take joy in seeing her fail. Blessings to you both....

We have no way of knowing the co worker's mind. She could have problems at home which overflow to her work site. She could have a problem with homosexuals. She could think the gay woman is lazy or that she doesn't do her job right or proper. See there are too many unknown factors to have to figure into the scenario.

Is the co worker antagonistic because of your friend sexual orientation or poor work habits? If it is the former then that a form of sexual harassment. She need to tell her boss to do something about it. Perhaps she is antagonistic because of her heritage which is racial discrimination and again, her boss needs to do something to correct it. If her boss decides to lay low, your friend can sue her boss.

Antagonistic people are that way because they have a very black and white concept of what is right and what is wrong, and people like your friend who are undeniable "good people" conflict with what they believe and they cannot reconcile that.
"good people" are not gay, but she is good, so is the concept of gay wrong?

Instead of changing their view of the world, it is easier for them to be hostile.

lol my name is karen s. too, well back to the question, people are always going to discriminate against lesibians either because there not comfortable with their sexuality or can't accept different kinds of people. your friend should ignore her co-worker or maybe chant(if she was buddhist)

idk, it could be that she is racist and she is a homophobic. tell your friend to worry about that. and if is so smart as you describe her tell her to confrnt that lady with words of wisdom and find out what is the true problem. talking is the way out and if she is too shy. tell her to collect clues of the ignorant comments and then shell get the reasons y this other person is treating "her" like this.

maybe her co-worker wants a relationship with your friend
and your friend has not made any moves on your co-worker
so she wants your friend's attention

She seems to be jealous, there really is no way to please everyone.
Tell her to be herself, she seems to be doing well on her own and some women are just outright vicious.

Tell your friend to hang in there!
